NZ EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION AWARD
KERIKERI HIGH SCHOOL WINS
Kerikeri High School won the very prestigious Education Excellence Award for Innovation in an International Programme at the Education New Zealand annual conference held in Christchurch last week. This award was one of only three presented and was open to all secondary, tertiary and private language institutions in New Zealand who enrol international students. Present to accept the award at the Conference in Christchurch were Mr Grant Berry, Director of International Students and Mrs Wrae Adelinger, International Homestay and Office Manager.
The award to Kerikeri High School recognises the innovation of its Sailing
Academy. Since its inception in 2000, the Sailing Academy has become the school's point of difference in an international market. The numbers in the Sailing Academy more than doubled from 9 in 2006 to 19 in 2007 which is a huge increase in a the context of 39 international fee paying students currently enrolled at the school. The school has received its first
application from Valencia on the strength of New Zealand's Louis Vuitton and Americas Cup exposure.
Ongoing international marketing of the school has led to a revision of
branding of the school. The beautiful Bay of Islands is reflected in the
colours and images chosen to promote the school through the International Department brochures, the KKHS school prospectus and the school magazine.
This has helped define the school while promoting Northland.
Principal Mrs Elizabeth Forgie states "Our niche is as the only Sailing
Academy at a secondary school in New Zealand. By recruiting internationally, this has helped to provide funding to increase the school fleet and made top level tuition available to domestic students who did not have this opportunity previously. The inclusion of NZQA standards has enhanced the value of the Academy for New Zealand students and has helped to lead to genuine career paths for them".
International sailing success has been generated for the school because of
its sailing coach Mr Derry Godbert. The school holds numerous national and international titles and thanks are due to Derry's many years of specialised tuition and the close connection to the Kerikeri Cruising Club. The Sailing Academy has been led by Derry since its inception. He is ably assisted this year by Mr Andrew Willis.
The school has developed a win/win situation for both international students and domestic students alike. By opening new international markets, Kerikeri High School has built on its strengths: sailing in the beautiful Bay of Islands diversified by developing a course that offers genuine career paths for New Zealand and international students.
