Sydney Harbour Pollution
A 15-year study by the University of Sydney has found that while water quality in some parts of Sydney Harbour is the cleanest it has ever been, sediments on the bottom are among the most polluted in the world. Sediment beds produced by storm-water run-off channels are the worst-affected areas, with dense layers of heavy metals, chlorines and hydrocarbons polluting the harbour floor.
Rare desert trees
A 39-kilometre fence will soon protect 3,000 rare trees on the edge of the Simpson Desert, 400 kilometres south-east of Alice Springs. The trees are acacia peuce and only grow in two other locations in Australia. The project has cost $300,000 and has involved volunteers from around the world.
Plastic bags ban in South Australia
The South Australian Government will spend $700,000 over the next three years in an effort to make the State plastic bag free. To encourage shoppers, about 12,000 eco-friendly, reusable carry bags will be given away at the Adelaide Central Market.
Wind farm sites
Moyne council, based in Port Fairy, has been told Meridian Energy is proposing a wind farm of up to 150 turbines to be located near Macarthur in south-west Victoria. The proposal is an alternative to wind farms that are usually built in sensitive coastal sites.
Land clearing
Record fines are being handed out and there are many court appearances for illegal land clearing in Queensland. The Department of Natural Resources has launched an awareness campaign so landholders can comply. In August alone there has been three matters finalised in the Magistrates Court in Queensland which saw fines of $10,000 and $7,500 to offenders.
